Alabama Center for the Arts
With the help of LIVE Design Group, Calhoun Community College and Athens University set out on a collaborative academic effort to create a facility for college art instruction, community education and cultural events that would serve as a catalyst for the region’s creative growth and expression. The venue is shared with the Theatre and Music departments of Athens State and Calhoun Community College and includes a Studio “Black Box” Theatre, Recital Hall, classrooms, rehearsal studios, recording studios, performance halls, faculty offices and various support spaces.
The 280-seat studio “Black Box” Theatre features flexible, reconfigurable seating; a full-sized scene shop; dressing rooms; a green room; costume and wardrobe rooms; and a sound and lighting control booth. The versatile design allows one institution to be in rehearsals, including full set pieces, while the other institution uses the studio theater for the full run of a production. Each room has been designed with special attention to acoustics, keeping sound from adjacent rooms from entering each other during rehearsals.
Today, the Alabama Center for the Arts Theatre and Recital Hall is a beacon for the arts, complementing the ongoing revitalization happening in downtown Decatur.
